Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, November 11, 2023 – Prime Minister Hon. James Marape announced on Friday, November 10, 2023, the allocation of K8.5 million to ensure the participation of the Papua New Guinea team in the XVII Pacific Games, scheduled to take place in Honiara, Solomon Islands, from November 19 to December 2.
This financial commitment comes in addition to the K4 million previously given by the Government through Treasury for Team PNG. The combined funds of K12.5 million are earmarked to cover the expenses for 515 athletes and officials making the journey to Honiara.
Prime Minister Marape, addressing a gathering of appreciative athletes and officials at Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium in Port Moresby, specified that K4.24 million originates from Kumul Minerals Holdings Ltd (KMHL), K1 million from the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB), and K3.26 million from Treasury. Representatives from KMHL and NGCB, both government agencies, were present alongside Prime Minister Marape to facilitate the payment.
The PNG Sports Foundation had initially requested K12.5 million, with K4 million already disbursed by Treasury, and the remaining K8.5 million fulfilled on Friday.
In his address, Prime Minister Marape emphasised the government’s commitment, stating, “Government is your ‘big papa’ and ‘big mama.’ We are here to help you.”
Acknowledging recent headlines, Prime Minister Marape expressed regret if there was a perception that the government did not prioritise the athletes’ participation. He clarified, “I want to apologise if some of you felt that we did not care. I sit on top of the food chain; instructions go down, but if those who work in between did not action this, I apologise sincerely.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the unifying power of sports in Papua New Guinea and the broader Pacific region. He urged the athletes to represent the country with pride and unity, emphasising their role as ambassadors for PNG.
“You are carrying your country’s flag, contributing to our development focus, and representing our nation on the Pacific stage,” he affirmed.
“When you get there, embody the spirit of unity, support your coaches and staff, and show that you come from the leading country in the Pacific.”
Encouraging camaraderie and diplomacy, Prime Minister Marape urged the athletes to forge new relationships with fellow Pacific islanders in Honiara.
“It’s not just about the games; it’s about yourself, your country, and networking throughout the entire Pacific,” he urged.
“Use this moment to develop yourself, compete well, win medals, and fly the Kumul flag.”
