Prime Minister Marape Calls For Peace, Unity And Humanity During Visit Of Chinese Hospital Ship Silk Road Ark

PORT MORESBY, 14 April 2026 — Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has called for greater global peace, unity, and cooperation, describing the visit of China’s Silk Road Ark hospital ship as a powerful demonstration of humanity in action.

Speaking at an official deck reception aboard the vessel at Fairfax Harbour, Port Moresby, on Monday (13 April) evening, Prime Minister Marape expressed the Government and people of Papua New Guinea’s deep appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for dispatching the vessel as part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Marape said the visit was both historic and meaningful, highlighting the importance of partnerships that deliver direct benefits to citizens.

“This week has been a very special one for our country,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“The presence of this vessel in our waters is not just about advanced capability — it is about humanity, compassion, and service to people.”

Over 5,000 Papua New Guineans Treated

The Prime Minister noted that more than 5,000 Papua New Guineans had received medical attention from the ship’s highly skilled team of doctors, nurses, and support personnel during its visit.

He conveyed his sincere gratitude to the ship’s commander and medical team, noting that their service had brought both healing and hope to many citizens.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the commander and all medical personnel who have come to serve our people,” he said.

“You have not only delivered medical care — you have strengthened friendship and goodwill between our nations.”

Prime Minister Marape also acknowledged the participation of PNG’s health authorities, Defence Force leadership, and government representatives, describing the collaboration as a strong example of partnership in action.

A Call For Peace And Responsible Global Leadership

In his address, Prime Minister Marape reflected on the broader global context, calling on nations with influence and capability to prioritise peace and cooperation.

“In a world facing many challenges, we need more harmony and understanding,” he said.

“Nations with strength must use that strength to serve humanity, not to create division or conflict.”

He said the Silk Road Ark stood as a symbol of how global powers can use their resources for humanitarian purposes, particularly in providing critical services such as healthcare.

“This vessel reflects the kind of leadership the world needs — leadership that uplifts lives, shares knowledge, and promotes peace.”

PNG Reaffirms ‘Friends To All, Enemies To None’ Policy

Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed Papua New Guinea’s independent foreign policy, emphasising that the country remains committed to maintaining positive relations with all nations.

“Papua New Guinea will always remain a friend to all and an enemy to none,” he said.

He noted that PNG continues to engage constructively with global partners, including the United States and Australia, while appreciating China’s respect for PNG’s sovereign decisions.

“We value relationships that are built on mutual respect, understanding, and shared benefit,” he added.

Recognising China’s Development Achievements

The Prime Minister also acknowledged China’s remarkable economic transformation over the past four decades, noting its success in lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and building a strong, modern economy.

He extended his appreciation to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his leadership and ongoing engagement with Papua New Guinea.

“We recognise and respect the progress China has made, and we appreciate the spirit of cooperation that continues to guide our relationship,” Prime Minister Marape said.

Science And Technology Must Serve Humanity

Prime Minister Marape emphasised that advancements in science, medicine, and technology must always be directed towards improving human lives.

He said the capabilities demonstrated by the Silk Road Ark highlighted how innovation could be used to deliver meaningful outcomes for communities.

“These advancements must always be used to protect life, to heal, and to serve humanity,” he said.

Strengthening Pacific Peace And Cooperation

Prime Minister Marape concluded by calling for continued cooperation among nations, particularly within the Pacific region, to ensure stability, development, and shared prosperity.

“The Pacific must remain a region of peace, cooperation, and mutual respect,” he said.

Background

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Papua New Guinea and to promote friendship between the two peoples, the Chinese PLA Navy hospital ship Silk Road Ark visited Port Moresby from 8 to 15 April 2026, providing high-level medical services to local citizens.

Commissioned in April 2024, the vessel measures 178 metres in length and 24 metres in width, with a full-load displacement of 14,450 tonnes. It is equipped with advanced medical facilities and a highly trained team comprising 60 doctors, 32 nurses, and support staff.

The ship is capable of undertaking a range of missions, including international humanitarian medical services, emergency response during major disasters, and medical exchanges and cooperation with foreign military and civilian institutions.
