Prime Minister Marape Opens BSP Tari Branch, Marks 55th Birthday with Call for Growth and Partnership

Tari, Hela Province, 24 April 2026 — Prime Minister Hon. James Marape today officially opened the new BSP Financial Group branch in Tari as he marked his 55th birthday, describing the occasion as a milestone for Hela Province and a strong sign of confidence in rural Papua New Guinea.

Addressing national leaders, provincial representatives, community leaders, business executives, and members of the public, Prime Minister Marape said the opening of the branch was more than the launch of a banking facility.

He said it represented progress, trust in the future of Tari, and the growing importance of provincial centres in the nation’s economic development.

“Today is a profound moment as our country advances into its 51st year,” he said.

“This occasion reflects a national story of partnership between government, business, communities, and leaders working together for a better future.”

Birthday Reflections and Gratitude

Prime Minister Marape used the occasion to reflect on his 55th birthday, expressing gratitude to God, his parents who are still living, his wife of 30 years, and the people who have supported him throughout his life and public service.

“Firstly, I thank God. Secondly, I thank my parents who are still alive today,” he said.

“I thank my wife who has stood with me for the last 30 years, and I thank the people who have graciously supported me since I entered public life.”

He said celebrating his birthday in Tari while opening an important new facility made the occasion especially meaningful.

Banking Services for the People

Prime Minister Marape said the branch would provide easier access to modern financial services for the people of Tari and surrounding districts, including workers, landowners, farmers, public servants, women entrepreneurs, students, and local businesses.

“For too long, many of our rural people have had to travel long distances to access banking services,” he said.“This branch brings those services closer to the people and allows local money to circulate within the local economy.”

He encouraged residents to use the branch to save money, support businesses, invest in education, and improve family livelihoods.

Praise for BSP

Prime Minister Marape commended BSP Chairman, Board, Chief Executive Officer Mark Robinson, management, and staff for continuing to expand services throughout the country.

“BSP has grown with our nation and continues to help build our economy,” he said.

“A healthy private sector supported by strong financial institutions creates jobs, supports commerce, and generates tax revenue.”

Recognition of Hela Leadership

The Prime Minister also praised Governor Philip Undialu and the Hela Provincial Government for visible development taking place in Tari.

He noted road upgrades, restoration of public facilities, and urban improvements now changing the face of the provincial capital.

“Roads are improving, buildings are being restored, and services are returning. This is what leadership should be about.”

Economic Growth Ahead

Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea’s economy had grown from below K25 billion in 2008 to around K135 billion today, and was on course to become a K200 billion economy within the next five to six years.

“With new investments in mining, petroleum, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and manufacturing, our economy will continue to grow,” he said.

Call for Unity

Prime Minister Marape concluded by urging the people of Hela to work together, maintain peace, and place development ahead of politics.

“Politics has its time, but nation-building must continue every day.

“Protect business, respect leadership, demand accountability, and work together for the future.”

He congratulated BSP, the Hela Provincial Government, and the people of Tari on the successful opening of the branch.

“Let this branch stand as a symbol of confidence, progress, and hope for Tari, Hela, and Papua New Guinea.”
