Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, MP, has extended his congratulations to the people and Government of India on 72 years of being a Republic.
PM Marape extended his congratulations when he attended a celebration hosted last Wednesday (January 27th 2021) night by the High Commissioner of India to Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Shri Sushil Kumar Singhal, at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby.
He said India is one of the biggest democracies in the world and hopes that PNG can learn from India to protect and build the democratic system of government.
“We share the same world view, in as far as the system of government is concerned, and the democratic government system is the best on the face of Planet Earth,” PM Marape said.
“Papua New Guinea will stand to gain a lot from the experience of India by fostering and growing our bilateral relationship.”
He said despite India’s population of 1.4 billion people, its government continued to ensure the people practise their democratic rights, especially their right to vote to select a leader.
PM Marape also invited investors from India to come to and start businesses or invest in the country.
“Papua New Guinea has a lot to offer India and our people-to-people relationship is very good,” he said.
“I commission the people of India – who have lived and worked in Papa New Guinea – to help sell investments opportunities in PNG in India.
“We are on the lookout for companies to come in and participate in downstream processing in as far as processing of gold, oil and gas and timber and fisheries.
“We have seven percent of the world’s bio-diversity.
“Bring in your technology and pharmaceutical companies and work with us to harvest our forest resources.” PM Marape also took time to acknowledge the people of India, and Papua New Guineans of Indian origin, who have been in the country for many years and contributed towards its development
