Port Moresby, December 14, 2023 – Prime Minister Hon. James Marape praised the dedication and efforts of the 300 contractors involved in the Government’s flagship ‘Connect PNG’ programme for generating employment opportunities for 30,000 individuals, including women, throughout Papua New Guinea.
The Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation during the Department of Works and Highways’ Christmas party in Port Moresby on Thursday, December 14, 2023, commending both local and overseas contractors for their contributions.
He emphasised the importance of overseas contractors subcontracting jobs to national companies, promoting a collaborative approach for the continued development and prosperity of Papua New Guinea.
“In the face of criticism towards my government, ‘Connect PNG’ has successfully employed over 30,000 individuals across Papua New Guinea in the last three years,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“If the 300 contractors are each providing jobs for a minimum of 100 people, that’s 30,000 people contributing to the workforce nationwide.”
Reflecting on his observations during the previous Christmas, Prime Minister Marape shared, “I personally travelled from Kikori to Madang to witness the impactful work being carried out by contractors between Mt Hagen and Watarais. I witnessed many Papua New Guinea girls actively engaged in the workforce. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the contractors for their significant efforts.”
While acknowledging the positive contributions, Prime Minister Marape urged all contractors, especially Papua New Guinean contractors, to elevate their performance.
“Contractors, particularly those from Papua New Guinea, must raise the bar,” he emphasised.
“You are building the future of our nation, and your dedication has a more transformational effect on the country than even the Kumuls (national rugby league team).”
In a stern message to overseas contractors, Prime Minister Marape asserted, “I will not tolerate a refusal to engage with Papua New Guinea sub-contractors. If you do not involve local sub-contractors, the directive is clear – exit, straightforward.”
