Prime Minister Marape departs for Dubai as France unveils unprecedented financial package for Papua New Guinea’s environmental initiatives

Port Moresby, December 1, 2023 – Prime Minister Hon. James Marape on Friday, December 1, 2023, embarked on a significant journey to Dubai, where an unprecedented financial package dedicated to Papua New Guinea, focusing on nature, forests, and climate change, will be unveiled by France. Prime Minister Marape is expected to return to Papua New Guinea on Monday following this crucial diplomatic mission.

The groundbreaking announcement is set to take place on the sidelines of COP 28 in Dubai. Ahead of his departure, Prime Minister Marape made the announcement in Port Moresby, revealing that French President, H.E. Emmanuel Macron, will officially disclose the details in Dubai.

The collaborative efforts in 2023 between Prime Minister Marape and President Macron, spanning across Gabon in Central Africa, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, and Paris in France, have proven to be immensely fruitful for Papua New Guinea. Notably, one of the successful outcomes is the launch of the K210 million European Union-funded Forestry, Climate Change, and Biodiversity (EU-FCCB) Programme in October this year in Port Moresby.

Prime Minister Marape underscores the forthcoming announcement as a pivotal moment for Papua New Guinea, describing it as the “icing on the cake” following recent achievements. He calls on developed nations to follow France’s exemplary commitment to implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement, especially in conserving Earth’s forests.

Expressing gratitude for France’s unwavering support, Prime Minister Marape commends President Macron as a standout leader in championing the cause of forest nations like Papua New Guinea. He reiterates Papua New Guinea’s steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and urges developed nations to honor their promises for the greater good of the global ecosystem.
