Prime Minister Hon. James Marape says Papua New Guinea continues to benefit from the reforms set in place by former Prime Minister, the late Sir Mekere Morauta.
He said this in Parliament on Tuesday (April 20th 2021) when paying his respects to Sir Mekere, who passed away last December, and was buried at Independence Hill in January.
PM Marape said monumental among Sir Mekere’s achievements were reforms in the country’s financial institutions and State-owned enterprises.
“Sir Mekere served as our country’s sixth Prime Minister,” PM Marape said.
“He was, before politics, a very-distinguished public servant.
“He stands among giants of our country.
“Though he was Prime Minister for three short years, the nation stands to benefit from some of the reforms he put in place during those three short years from 1999 to 2002.
“I stand here today, not just as Prime Minister representing the country, but also on behalf of my children and wife, on behalf of my people of Pori and Tari, to pay respect in this first instance to the late Sir Mekere Morauta.
“We respect him for his work and contribution to the country.
“May his memory guide us into the future.”
PM Marape also welcomed Kandep MP Hon. Don Polye and Bougainville Regional MP Hon. Peter Tsiamalili Jr to Parliament,
