JUNE 13, 2023

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Prime Minister Hon. James Marape today (Tuesday, June 13, 2023) took a moment to reflect on the rich legacy of Papua New Guinea’s founding political party, Papua New Guinea Union (Pangu) Pati, as it commemorates its 56th anniversary.

The party, now under the leadership of PM Marape, was established in June 1967 by esteemed founding fathers including Michael Somare, Albert Maori Kiki, Lucas Waka, Barry Holloway, and Cecil Abel. The initial interim executive consisted of prominent figures such as Somare, Joseph Nombri, Oala Oala-Rarua, and Vin ToBaining. Additionally, it had nine members of the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea: Nicholas Brokam, Holloway, Wegra Kenu, Siwi Kurondo, Paul Lapun, Pita Lus, Paliau Maloat, James Meanggarum, and Tony Voutas.

“Today marks the 56th anniversary of Pangu Pati,” stated PM Marape.

“It was on this very day, in 1967, that the founding fathers of our great nation made the historic decision to establish Pangu.

“The first leader of Pangu was Sir Paul Lapun of Bougainville, exemplifying our unwavering commitment to national unity.

“Fifty-six (56) years later, Pangu Pati remains dedicated to fostering national unity, with 53 MPs currently serving in the Parliament.

“We continue to uphold our sovereignty as one nation, one people, and one country.

“Pangu persistently advocates for fairer distribution of our resources, ultimately leading to economic independence for Papua New Guinea.

“Our vision encompasses the connectivity of all regions through vital infrastructure development.

“Pangu will continue its battle against corruption and strive to restore the integrity of all Constitutional Office Holders, ensuring full accountability of our leaders to the people.

“We aspire to see functional public services and proactive law enforcement agencies.

“These ideals encapsulate the essence of Pangu as we celebrate the anniversary of this national icon, which played a pivotal role in our political independence in 1975, liberating us from the clutches of colonialism.

“Pangu is no ordinary party; it is the very party that championed our political independence, leading up to the birth of our nation.

“Pangu bestowed upon the country its three branches of government.

“The Constitution itself was meticulously crafted by Pangu.

“I remain wholeheartedly committed to the principles set forth by Pangu on this historic day, June 13, 1967, and I am now steadfastly pursuing economic independence for our beloved nation.

“As we look back on 56 years of progress, Pangu aims to ensure that no citizen is left behind.”
